Lena, the Sun Dog

My sun girl Lena, our 13-year-old golden retriever passed this day with the help of Doc Bauder's relief vet who helped her take that walk into the woods. Like Olie, she led an adventurous, Alaskan life, but it was her loyalty and friendship and constant companionship that made her "my" dog. Bruce and I buried her up on Harbor Mt., next to Olie, but I'm willing to bet those two are romping the beach out at Starrigavin this sunset evening like five-year-old retrievers with an unlimited number of tennis balls, starfish victims, and getting as wet as they want.

Happy Alaska Day!

Today we celebrate Alaska Day. By definition it's a holiday to mark the occasion on which Alaska was transferred from Russia to the United States. The ceremony took place here in Sitka on October 18, 1867 and it is Sitka that still commemorates this passage with a week of celebrations and ceremonies, everything from a beard and bonnet contest, formal ball, book sale, pie sale, writing contest, etc. But the best part of Alaska Day is the parade. It begins with a Main Street fly-over by our USCG staff, is continued with all the silly, hometown parade antics you'd expect in a lot of small towns, only this is an Alaskan small town, so the antics are often left of center and sometimes just odd. All of this is topped off with the community itself. October is a fine time for a local celebration. You don't have to contend with cruise ship visitors and you run into a lot of friend and folks who must have started their winter hibernation early because it's usually the first time you've seen some since the 4th of July parade.

I mark this occasion with a photo scanned from one of my all-time favorite Alaska books, Good Time Girls by Lael Morgan. If you've not read this, it's an historical look at the women who came north during the gold rush days and the limited career choices offered women during this time. Excellent read and amazing photos.

Finally, here is also a photo of my little good time girl - Rie, partaking in today's festivities. Happy Alaska Day!

My Arty Space

Here's where I do all my creating. What a fine, sunny morning it was today!

Crazy Amigo: Bleach

Crazy Amigo: Bleach

I've only ever used bleach as a cleaning agent - not an art product, so you can imagine my surprise its effect on the owl. I brushed a layer of it over the entire page, set the owl down on the page, and the effect of the bleach worked through the page and onto the owl. Eerie stuff, bleach.
